The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

After Freedom: The Rise of the Post-Apartheid Generation in Democratic South Africa by Katherine S. Newman and Ariane De Lannoy.

Written twenty years after the end of apartheid, this book focusses on the new generation building a multiracial democracy in South Africa but also mired in economic inequality and political conflict. The death of Nelson Mandela in 2013 arrived just short of the twentieth anniversary of South Africa's first free election, reminding the world of the promise he represented as the nation's first Black president. Despite significant progress since the early days of the new democracy, frustration increased as inequalities that once divided the races grew within them as well.
