Help Strengthen Food Security at UP – World Food Day Appeal

Posted on October 11, 2024

As we approach World Food Day on 16 October 2024, we are reminded of the critical importance of food security, particularly within our own University of Pretoria (UP) community. Through the Student Nutrition and Progress Programme (SNAPP), we are addressing the needs of students facing food insecurity, ensuring they receive the support necessary to succeed academically.

We need your help to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable students. From 16 to 31 October 2024, we invite all members of the UP community – students, staff and partners – to consider contributing in one of the following ways:

1. Donate within-date, non-perishable canned goods (with a focus on high-protein canned food items such as pilchards, corned beef, beans, or canned vegetables like chakalaka and mixed veggies). Departments and faculties will be requested to gather their donations and notify SNAPP when they are ready for collection.

2. Make a financial contribution to SNAPP. As UP is a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), your donation will qualify for a Section 18a tax certificate.

Your contributions will directly support the Student Nutrition and Progress Programme (SNAPP), providing essential nutritional assistance to students in need. These donations will also greatly supplement the non-perishable goods donated by Tiger Brands through their Plates for Days programme, ensuring a more comprehensive food support system for our students. This is especially critical as our students prepare for and focus on their exams, helping them stay nourished and thrive in their academic journey.

Please join us in this collective effort to combat food insecurity on our campus and ensure that no student is left behind due to hunger.

Should you have any questions, kindly reach out to SNAPP at [email protected] for further details.

Thank you for your generosity and support.
