In memoriam: Professor Mochichi Samuel Martin Mokgokong 31/08/1952 – 24/01/2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Mochichi Samuel Martin Mokgokong, former Head of the Department of Neurosurgery in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Prof Mokgokong passed away at Life Groenkloof Hospital on 24 January 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

A highly respected neurosurgeon, Prof Mokgokong etched his name in history as South Africa’s first black neurosurgeon. His pivotal role in separating craniopagus twins, Mpho and Mphonyana, in 1986 solidified his status as an iconic figure in South African neurosurgical history. Transitioning from the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA as it was then called, now known as Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University), where he served as the acting executive dean. Prof Mokgokong assumed the position of Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pretoria from 2008 until his retirement in 2017. He was an emeritus professor at the UP School of Medicine where he oversaw the growth of more than 15 neurosurgeons from the unit.

Prof Mokgokong’s influence extended beyond academia; he also chaired the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), further emphasising his prominence in the medical community. His contributions were recognised with prestigious accolades, including a meritorious service award from Steve Biko Academic Hospital. Additionally, he was deeply touched by the acknowledgment bestowed upon him during the inaugural ‘Van Rensburg-Mokgokong’ Lecture in 2021.


Professor Mokgokong hailed from a family of eminent medical professionals, with Professor Ephraim Thibedi Mokgokong standing as one of his most significant influences and pillars of strength. He will be remembered as a warm, insightful individual unafraid to advocate for what he believed in. Prof Mokgokong’s legacy will endure within his department and the broader medical community.
