The University of Pretoria’s (UP) Department of Facilities Management recently took the time to applaud the dedication of 11 outstanding individuals who collectively boast an impressive 170 years of service at UP. The staff members were awarded long-service certificates as a token of appreciation for their unwavering commitment to both the University and the department.

The department is responsible for the planning, development, maintenance operations and record-keeping of the University’s growing estate. Through the service of these and other colleagues, the department continues to deliver on its mandate. 

Professor Susan Adendorff, Director of the Department of Facilities Management, commended their hard work, dedication and loyalty. She applauded them for embracing change and for having foresight in anticipating challenges.

“We are proud of the hard work and dedication that you have shown,” Prof Adendorff said. “Your meticulous attention to detail and ability to foresee problems before they even arise have made you indispensable assets to the institution. It has been an absolute pleasure working with each and every one of you.”

The staff members who were honoured are:

• Yolanda Bekeur – 10 years 
• Petrus Venter – 10 years
• Lebo Makwane – 10 years 
• Vusimuzi Nyalunga – 10 years 
• Tiny Shongwe – 15 years 
• Lukas Mtau – 15 years 
• Jan Letoaba – 15 years
• Judas Mahlangu – 15 years 
• Aubrey Matthews – 20 years 
• Francinah Mphaka – 20 years 
• Jacques Smit – 30 years 

These individuals have played a pivotal role in shaping the physical landscape of UP. Their collective experience has not only contributed to the growth of the University but has also infused it with a spirit of excellence and resilience.

As they received their awards, the pride of long service was evident on their faces, which reflected not just their commitment to UP but also the profound bonds they've formed over the years.

“Work is not work per se, but an experience that combines job satisfaction with an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning; I know that I am part of the team responsible for making it possible,” said Aubrey Matthews, a senior assistant director in the department. He added that it is only possible to succeed in whatever role you play by working as a team and by being there for each other.

Their long-term service is not just years on a timeline but a representation of dedication and an unwavering commitment to the  shared vision of the department and the University.
