“I embrace every challenge as an opportunity to tackle a situation head on,” says Jason Pillay of UP’s Department of Finance. He shares his professional journey with Tukkievaria.
“I firmly believe in approaching every challenge with a proactive mindset, constantly seeking solutions rather than dwelling on the problems themselves,” says Jason Pillay, accounts payable officer in the Department of Finance at the University of Pretoria (UP). He tells us about his role at UP and the approach that he takes to his work.
Tell us briefly about yourself.
First and foremost, I am a family man – providing for my family gives me great joy. I am empathetic, patient, tolerant and I aspire to go beyond my role as I believe that I am responsible, accountable, committed and honest. I strive to give my best. I live a life of authenticity, and many that engage with me would say that I am an authentic human being.
What do you do on a daily basis in the Department of Finance?
I was employed by UP in 2014. Primarily, I am responsible for supplier payments. This is an important task as the image of the University is at stake if timeous payments are not made. I also have a strong understanding of the University’s procure-to-pay policy and the People Soft system.
Since joining the accounts payable team at UP, I faced many challenges, especially with regard to accounts that have historical issues. Together with my manager, Devon Govinden, we uprooted these transactions and resolved them. I believe our suppliers are our partners in ensuring that our academic programme is not interrupted.
We’ve built strong relationships with our suppliers for a number of years and the accounts payable unit strives to meet daily deadlines. Our boat is steered by professional managers who go the extra mile by assisting departments with payment issues; we are proud to be part of the finance team. I believe in self-improvement and see myself in a managerial position within the next few years.
What attracted you to UP?
The culture, diversity, values, mission, growth and stability, as well as its employee recognition.
What do you enjoy about your job and why?
At the core of my professional philosophy lies my identity as a problem-solver. I firmly believe in approaching every challenge with a proactive mindset, constantly seeking solutions rather than dwelling on the problems themselves. This perspective not only allows me to tackle complex issues effectively but also fosters a positive and solution-oriented atmosphere within my workplace.
In essence, my job provides me with a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment, where the blend of diverse perspectives and my problem-solving attitude come together to create an exciting and fulfilling professional journey.
What do you enjoy least about your job?
During the pandemic and lockdown, I felt it was more convenient to work remotely rather than being office-based.
What are the challenges that come with your line of work?
No challenges are too big or small. I embrace every challenge as an opportunity to tackle a situation head on, be it huge volumes or problems arising with regard to non-compliance.
What can be improved within your division to deal with those challenges?
Deadlines can be met more effectively, and there could be better time management and prioritisation.
What are your plans for the future and do you see yourself taking on a more senior role?
My plan is to develop and grow within the finance sector. Yes, I definitely would take on a more senior role, and when an opportunity arises, I will apply.
What is your favourite motivational quote/s?
Treat people the way you want to be treated. Talk to people the way you want to be spoken to. Everyone deserves respect. Respect is earned, not given. I strongly believe in good values and respect.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I am a family-oriented father and grandfather; I love spending time with my grandkids. I also love attending church services with my family. Spontaneous braais over the weekends are a favourite pastime.
Do you have any suggestions for making UP an even better place to work?
By implementing remote or hybrid work, UP can create a work environment that is adaptable to different working preferences, prioritise employee well-being, and promote a culture of inclusivity and productivity, whether employees are working remotely, in the office or in a hybrid arrangement.
Is there anything that you would like to share with the UP community?
Life is short, so live for the moment. Each new day is a gift from God – embrace it with the strength and power within you.
