‘The wheelchair is more than just about providing better access and mobility’

“We are so excited to have our own dedicated wheelchair for the University of Pretoria Museums,” says Sian Tiley-Nel, the Head of the University of Pretoria Museums.

Kindly donated by the Department of Facilities Management, and with special thanks and support from the Director, Prof. Susan Adendorff, the available wheelchair gives full access, respect and accommodates persons with disabilities within museum parameters, opening up the campus and art cultural landscape without hindrances.

The UP Museums are continually trying to improve access by upgrading equipment, spaces, reviewing distance of display labels, touchable artwork and ease of access to information and facilities to promote social inclusion and diversity.

This wheelchair is more than just about providing better access and mobility, it's about breaking barriers for persons with disabilities. Visitors with walking disabilities, walkers, canes or wheelchairs don't need to try to navigate around awkward floor displays and high counter-tops, and should be able to view labels for artwork at appropriate heights.

The UP Museums are dedicated to doing whatever is possible to enable visitors with disabilities to freely explore and experience what is on offer.
