A message from the UP Director: Security Services, Mr Johan Boonzaaier

Posted on August 16, 2022

Dear UP staff and students,

A few vehicles have been identified as being at high risk and are often stolen on and around the various UP campuses. Some of the most frequently stolen vehicles include the Toyota Hilux Double Cab (especially Legend 45 and Legend 50 models); Toyota Fortuner, Prado, Land Cruiser, Etios and Yaris; Ford Ranger Wildtrak; and the Volkswagen Polo.

If you drive a high-risk vehicle, please note the following suggestions:

  • Something more than the standard factory alarm system needs to be fitted.
  • You need to install a petrol cut-off switch, an anti-hijack system, or a tracking unit or two.
  • Take care where you park, especially in public carparks.
  • Activate a Gorilla-type steering lock and/or pedal clamp.
  • Use a wheel clamp.
  • Remove a small, integral part of the engine when you park, and replace it when you return.
  • Use a gear lock.

These measures are only deterrents, and might not prevent your vehicle from being stolen, but they could prompt the perpetrator to move on to another vehicle.

Kind regards,

Mr Johan Boonzaaier
