The Special Collections Book of the Week this week is:

Academic freedom in a democratic South Africa – essays and interviews on higher education and the humanities by John Higgings.

This book argues that the core content of academic freedom, the principle of supporting and extending open intellectual enquiry, is essential to realising the full public value for higher education and emphasizes the central role that the humanities, and the particular forms of argument and analysis they embody, bring to task. This book maintains that in these current debates around the social functions of the university, it is essential not to lose sight or marginalised the teaching of the humanities.
