Tuks de Race, a race for social wellbeing!

Posted on October 29, 2021

The University of Pretoria Campus Tours (UPCT) rolled out its first Tuks de Race (aka Scavenger Hunt) on 13 October 2021. It was a resounding success and great fun was had by all.

The aim of the game is to get UP staff in their various departments and divisions out of their homes or offices and into the fresh air back on campus, while having fun and exercising together. It is also billed as a team-building experience.

The “race” criss-crosses the Hatfield campus, taking you to places you might never have known about. At each designated spot, a clue and riddle can be found, leading to the next stop. At the stop there are group selfie photo activities that need to be completed and a tile needs to be collected for a word scramble which is built at the end of the game.

The game comprises two options - a longer version (10 stops, 4 kms and about 60-70 minutes’ completion time) or a shorter version (5 stops, 2 kms and about 30-40 minutes completion time). All of this takes place while adhering strictly to COVID-19 regulations and social distancing; with mask-wearing as mandatory. There are exciting prizes up for grabs to motivate fellow colleagues.

UPCT is the brainchild of Prof Karen Harris, Head of the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, and is managed as a practical component of the Honours degree in Heritage and Cultural Tourism. Besides Tuks de Race, which is its latest innovation, UPCT offers a range of tours, both physically on the Hatfield Campus, as well as virtually tours across all UP faculties and campuses. These tours are regulated under COVID-19 regulations, usually take an hour to complete, and are conducted in English.

  • Physical tours: General, customised, sculpture, and gardens tours.
  • Virtual: General and customised.
  • Virtual campus-specific: Hatfield (Humanities, Engineering and Built Environment, Economic and management Sciences, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Theology); Groenkloof (Education); Onderstepoort (Vet Sci); Prinshof (Health Sciences); Aloes (Hillcrest); sculptures (Hatfield) and gardens (Hatfield).

UPCT will also be presenting an ATLAS webinar on 24 November 2021 entitled “Health is the new wealth in social prescribing tourism”.
