“We are a phone call away during the eased lockdown period”

Posted on October 15, 2021

Although we have been living with the impact of COVID-19 for more than a year now, the uncertainty and strain on our lives has not improved. We must cope with increased anxiety, pandemic fatigue, lack of energy, neglecting healthy habits and struggling with instilling healthy boundaries. This is resulting in a significant impact on mental health. Mental health issues that were present before the pandemic have become worse and new symptoms and problems are occurring, reaching staggering levels.

EWP@UP would like to remind you that taking care of your mental wellbeing is as important as looking after your physical health. Good mental health and positive wellbeing can help you to cope with the stress of current circumstances. It is normal to feel overwhelmed, stressed and anxious, along with a wide range of other emotional reactions. Taking proactive measures can help you to find the silver lining in the face of what feels scary, and manage your mental wellbeing during these times of uncertainty. If you are experiencing any symptoms that are affecting your daily life negatively, it is important to get professional help as soon as possible so that you can start the process of getting better.

EWP@UP encourages all UP staff members who might be struggling with emotional distress or who are worried to send an email to [email protected]/[email protected] to arrange for counselling with one of our counselling professionals. E-counselling services will be available via Skype or WhatsApp video call. Contact counselling sessions can be arranged on request.

Alternatively, you can visit our Intranet at: https://www1.up.ac.za/webcenter/portal/EWP/ or download the UP mobile app should you require more information on any of our services.

For emergencies you can contact the UP-Care Line on 0800 747 747 or the mental health initiative of Higher Health at 0800 36 36 36.
