Dear Student

The 2019 Elections’ season for the 2020 SRC is about to start. The official date for the elections will be announced at the piazza on Tuesday, 23 July 2019 at 12:30.

Given the overwhelming positive experiences in the 2018 elections, and the discussions held with student leaders, the platform of the 2019 elections will continue to be electronic voting. You will receive an email with the link and a password that will take you to the elections page; once you have chosen your candidates, click ‘submit’ and you are done voting.

You will be able to vote from any electronic device that you can access your emails on, including your computers, laptops, tablets and cell phones.

We have enlisted the help of the national Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to run this election, and it will be part of the process leading up to Election Day. There will also be more election marketing activity across all campuses to encourage students to stand and vote. To this end, the IEC will liaise with all faculties to improve communications and logistics for the elections.

The IEC will make nomination forms available from the Department of Student Affairs (DSA). The completed nomination forms can submitted at DSA reception at Roosmaryn building, or at the IEC offices, which are also set up at all the external campuses. A register for submitted forms will be made available for candidates to sign when submitting.

We call on each of you to participate in this round of elections to enhance democracy on campus and to make sure that we have strong and capable student leaders. We encourage you to participate by availing yourself to stand for the elections, or to nominate a capable peer, and to make sure that you cast your ballot on 26-28 August 2019.

The nominations open from 23 July 2019 and the last day for submissions is 5 August 2019 at 16:00.

Posters will be up, and further communication will be sent to keep students informed about the elections.

There will be announcements in PDBY, including a special edition of the student paper on the elections with all the qualifying candidates.  We implore all of you to pay attention and participate.

Please note the following:

The polls for the 2019 SRC Elections will run on 26-28 August 2019, facilitated by the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission)

Nominations will be open for the following portfolios:

  1. President
  2. SRC Secretary
  3. SRC Treasurer
  4. Facilities, Safety & Security
  5. Marketing, Media & Communications
  6. Study Finance
  7. Postgraduate & International Student Affairs
  8. Day Student & External Campus Affairs
  9. Societies
  10. Transformation and Student Success

The constitution for student governance has opened channels for broad participation in the SRC from all spheres of student life; this is now the time to make your mark count.

You have our full commitment to ensure that these processes enjoy the highest level of integrity.

For all enquiries regarding any of the processes, send an email to this address: [email protected]

Yours sincerely,

Dr Matete Madiba
