Information session on osteoporosis

Posted on August 15, 2017

The UP Corporate Wellness Programme, presented in partnership with Bestmed Medical Scheme, is pleased to inform you that we are continuing with our monthly group intervention initiative during lunch breaks, from March to October 2017. The information sessions, which will be presented by a Bestmed medical health professional, are aimed at educating staff on a variety of health-related topics and helping them to make voluntary behavioural changes that will reduce health risks and enhance their productivity and well-being. All UP employees should contribute towards building a healthier and more positive workforce.

The fourth information session will deal with osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a slow-developing, insidious disease where bone density diminishes and the bones become increasingly brittle and crumble easily, increasing the risk for bone fractures. The average loss of bone density in women over the age of 35 years is 0.5 to 1.0% a year. Although all people develop osteoporosis, its severity differs among individuals and between men and women. Those attending the session will gain a thorough understanding of the clinical picture of osteoporosis, as well as the importance of exercise and vitamins.

By the end of the information session, persons who attended should:

  • have a basic overview of the clinical background of osteoporosis, risk factors involved and screening procedures,
  • understand the importance of exercise and supplements such as calcium, magnesium, vitamins D and C, mineral boron, and plant sterols, not only for bone health, but also for general health and wellbeing, and
  • have an overview of the integrative approach to managing and preventing osteoporosis.
