Karl Frenzel, a BCom Honours in Taxation student at the University of Pretoria, has been named as the Young Tax Professional of the Year 2016 in South Africa.

The Young Tax Professional of the Year is an international competition run by the multinational professional services firm Ernst & Young (EY), in which young and successful tax students from different countries are encouraged to demonstrate a range of skills by completing a tax questionnaire.

The first round of the South African leg of the competition took place on 21 October 2016, when twelve shortlisted candidates were tested for tax knowledge and professional skills. A panel of judges consisting of tax academics, representatives from the South African Institute of Tax Professionals, and directors from EY judged the presentations of the candidates.

At the gala dinner, the candidates were addressed by EY Africa Tax Leader Ms Lucia Hlongwane. Mr Frenzel will represent South Africa at the international competition, to be held in Amsterdam at the end of November.
