Presenter: Dr Bianca Verlinden obtained a BSc (Biotechnology, 2009) and a BSc Hons (Biochemistry, 2010) degree from the University of Pretoria, both cum laude. In 2011, her MSc degree was upgraded to a PhD degree in Biochemistry. During her PhD, Bianca received 5 international awards relating to her research and bio-entrepreneurship endeavours. The studies of her thesis led to the discovery of a novel antimalarial scaffold, distinct from any existing antimalarial compound. Her work has been published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and has been cited 24 times and included in the following books: 2012 edition of Advances in protozoa research and treatment, 2013 edition of Amines- Advances in research and applications and was also reviewed in the 2013 Current topics in medicinal chemistry. These findings have also been presented at 11 international conferences, most on invitation. Bianca is an avid communicator and has trained as a public speaker for the past 8 years (2009-current) at Scientia Toastmasters Club, Pretoria. She has also been trained at the SARIMA (South African Research and Innovation Management Association): Science Communication for research and innovation which focuses on presenting science to the media. Bianca has also received media training through the On-cue Communications Television Media Presenting Course.
