On Friday last week the Vice-Chancellor provided a status report on the election of the 2016 SRC at the University of Pretoria (UP). 

It is in the interest of all concerned that the election processes be declared free and fair before any announcement of the results is made. 

The complaints that have been lodged about some aspects of the election process are still being investigated. Until all investigations and internal processes have been concluded, no final declaration on the election or its results can be made.

The matter is being dealt with as expeditiously as possible, bearing in mind that it is critically important for the structures involved to really apply their minds to the matters at hand.

The inauguration and induction of the 2016 SRC, which were planned for this week, have been cancelled until further notice. All role players concerned will be given appropriate notice of rescheduling in due course.

In the meantime, the 2015 SRC remains in office to actively address student interests. Their term ends only on 31 December 2015. 

An appeal is again made to all stakeholders to remain calm and to allow the internal processes to be exhausted.
