TuksAthletics arrived in Potchefstroom on 24 March 2015 hoping to defend their unbroken streak as winners of the Varsity Athletics Series since the inception of the competition.
Akani Simbine started the quest in spectacular fashion when he won the 100 m in 10,09 seconds – one if the fastest times ever on local soil – and then went on to complete the mission when he anchored the 4 x 100 m relay (the final event of the evening) – which TuksAthletics as well.
Another highlight saw two brothers winning gold medals in individual events for the first time in the history of Varsity Athletics. Leroux and Muntingh Hamman won the 400H in 50,82 seconds and the 100H in 14,34 seconds, respectively. Not to be outdone by the Hamman brothers, twins Jon and Janet Seeliger won gold as members of the winning medley relay team.
Other notable performances were Ruan Combrinck: gold in the shot put (16,97 m), Duwayne Boer: gold in the triple jump (15,59 m), the 4 x 100 m women’s relay team: gold (46,66), Mpho Links: silver in the high jump (2,05m), Chene Coetzee: silver in the hammer throw (54,26m), Anneri Ebersohn: silver in the 400 m (54,89), Danielle Coetzee: bronze in the javelin (40,70 m), Charlene Engelbrecht: bronze in the discus (42,55m), and Margaret Olwoch: bronze in the 200 m (24,06).
The final scores were: Tuks 127, PUK, 117, Kovsies 89, UJ 85,5, Maties 72, UWC 60,5, NMMU 50, TUT 29.
