Posted on February 23, 2011

Prof Wolf is Chair of the Department of Geosciences at the Oregon State University in the United States (US) of America. He is internationally known for his involvement in water resources policy resolution, and issues relating water resources to political conflict and cooperation, and contributed significantly to water conflict resolution in the Middle East (Israel and Palestine). He is also and expert on the environmental science on climate change, and its impact on the worlds water. Prof Wolf serves as consultant to the US Department of State and the US Agency for the international development on international water resource and dispute resolution.

The message from his lecture was to encourage people to put more emphasis on religion as a common focus in water when resolving water conflicts. Water is a basic right for human existence, just as religion, and by emphasising this in conflict situations one can achieve much more than only focusing on the economic or industrial value of water. Prof Wolf’s lecture was attended by students, UP staff as well as by stakeholders who are concerned about the status of water in South Africa which might lead to greater conflict as the demand for clean water increases in future.
