Minister from Sudan visits the University of Pretoria

Posted on June 28, 2011

The purpose of the visit was to explore avenues for training and for scientific research, collaboration and exchange of expert visits with regard to animal and agricultural sciences. The Sudanese Ministry acknowledged the great progress in the veterinary medicine and other related fields at the University of Pretoria.

The Minister and delegates visited UP’s Department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences to observe the research endeavours and apply it to Sudan’s own animal resources and fisheries sector.

Minister Ibrahim said the sector is important in Sudan as it contributes to the livelihood of most of the country’s people. He also requested research cooperation with the University of Pretoria regarding the newly established camel research centres in Sudan. This new research area focuses on increased awareness of oil production by means of camel mill use, as well as the production of camel milk.

Prof De la Rey welcomed the opportunity to extend the relationship with the Sudanese Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries, as it is in line with the University of Pretoria’s strategy to be a leading international university. “In internationalising ourselves we want to have a stronger focus on working in African context”, she said.

She added that the University has a lot to learn from the experiences of the Sudanese Ministry of Animal Resources and Fisheries.

Prof Cheryl de la Rey hands out a gift to Sudanese Minister shortly after their meeting.
