South Africa Fairs Well At the Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup

In the first match Evans Maripa faced Aristomenis Nikolopoulos and achieved a whitewash result of 6-0 6-1, "I was very encouraged by my performance and was able to stick to my game plan. At the end of the day, I enjoyed the match," said a confident Maripa.


Without breaking a sweat, Mathonsi beat Greek Georgios Lazaridis 6-3 6-0 displaying the powerful serve and strong forehand that he is renowned for. The SA Men, Mathonsi and Marsh then took to the court to play doubles against Lazaridis and team mate Stamatis Epameinondas. Once again, the South Africans were on top form proving their superiority with a final score, 6-0 6-1. Mathonsi said, "Beating Greece 3-0 has been a great confidence booster and we hope tomorrow brings the same result."

In the quad's division, the South Africans faced fierce competition from the Canadian team, with Lucas Sithole suffering a 6-0 6-0 defeat at the hands of Sarah Hunt.  Steven Kekai took one game off Adrian Dielman 6-0 6-1.  The final doubles is yet to be played.

The juniors and women will play later today and will face the Netherlands and Russia respectively.

The World Team Cup takes place between April 25 – May 01, 2011 from 09h00 – 17h00 at the University of Pretoria’s Sports Grounds, South Street.
