In their paper, published in the Scientometrics journal and titled “The Influence of Scientific Research Output of Academics on Economic Growth in South Africa: An autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) application”, they argue that South Africa’s academic research output – published articles measured against the rest of the world – could be considered a factor influencing the country’s economic growth as measured by gross domestic product (GDP). The existence of such a relationship could be a powerful instrument in the hands of the South African science and technology community in its quest to raise scarce resources. |
