Prof Schoeman's election from 2008 to 2010 follows on his tenure of three years as ordinary member of the examination board during 2005 to 2007. His role involves organizing, setting and evaluating the annual examination for mainly European veterinary residents wishing to become European Veterinary Specialists in small animal internal medicine.

Prof Schoeman has been director of the ECVIM-CA residency programme of the Faculty since 2001 and has recently successfully applied for re-accreditation of the Pretoria residency programme for the five-year period 2008 to 2012. Five UP students have successfully graduated from the programme during the past 7 years. This is one of only two such programmes outside Europe to be accredited. (see www.ecvim-ca.org)

Prof Johan Schoeman

According to Prof Schoeman, the major strengths of the programme lies in the large and varied case load, excellent facilities as well as being supported by excellent staff and internationally recognized clinicians. The programmes of diagnostic imaging as well as anaesthesiology within the Department of Companion Animal Clinical Studies are also accredited with their respective European colleges.
