The Faculty of Theology was officially opened for the new academic year on Monday, 14 February 2011 when staff, students and visitors attended a worship service in the UP Chapel next to Tukkiewerf, led by the Dean, Prof Johan Buitendag.
Prof Buitendag said as introduction that the occasion not only marked the first day of the Faculty’s academic activities, but also of a new decade. It was Prof Buitendag’s first opening ceremony as Dean of the Faculty.
The event commenced with an academic procession after which Prof Julian Müller, the Deputy Dean, welcomed all present.
Mr Ulrich Ohloff, Chairperson of the Theology Student House welcomed all students, especially the first year students. He encouraged them to ask themselves why they are studying theology. “Most of you will be able to answer that question simply by saying that you feel called to be a preacher”, he said. He also encourged them to focus on Jesus and to make that their primary goal in life.
