He has a wide interest in the classification of the rich southern African flora and also published popular works including Field Guide to Wild Flowers of the Highveld, Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa, A Photographic Guide to Wild Flowers of South Africa, Photo Guide to Trees of Southern Africa and How to Identify Trees in Southern Africa.
Prof Van Wyk is responsible for most undergraduate and all graduate teaching in plant taxonomy/systematics and has been on the staff of the Department of Plant Science at UP since 1977.
