Prof. Serena Coetzee, the Director for the Centre for Geoinformation Science, cordially invites you to a public lecture titled: ‘Open source as an inner habit and the impact of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo)’ which will be presented by established international Visiting Professor, Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef Behr.

Abstract

Development, maintenance and usage of free and open source software solutions, standards and data can be observed in the geospatial information technology since years. More and more individuals and companies have committed themselves to the idea of Open Source and completed their portfolio with freely available components. The public lecture will present the fundamental principles of this movement, its motivating factors and basic business models of the Open Source realm.

Brief Biographical sketch of Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef Behr

Prof. Dr. Franz-Josef Behr graduated in Geodesy from Karlsruhe University (KIT), Germany, in 1983. He joined Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences as a full time professor of spatial information processing in 2002. He is currently teaching software development, Internet Technology and Internet GIS as well as Database design, XML technologies and scientific writing. 
He published two GIS text books, more than 60 scientific papers and gave numerous presentations at international conferences. He is head of the Laboratory for interoperable, and open-source Geospatial Software, Data and Standards (HFT ICA-OSGeo-Lab). He is co-founder and head of the Applied Geoinformatics for Society and Environment conferences which will take place in Windhoek this year.
