Presenters:

Dr Trish Cooper

Dr Cooper is a senior lecturer within the Unit for Academic Literacy at the University of Pretoria. She obtained her doctorate in Linguistics following a longitudinal study of lexical bundles in student writing. Her primary interest has always been language teaching and learning, and she joined Wits Language School in 2004 to run short courses in English as a Foreign Language (EFL). She later also took over the management of the African, Asian, and European languages unit on the principle that the same approach to language teaching can be applied across all languages. Dr Cooper moved from Wits University to the University of Pretoria in October 2020 to establish a Centre for Language Learning which would offer EFL courses to international students.

Dr Oscar Eybers

Dr Eybers is in his 7th year of facilitating academic literacies at UAL. This is, however, his eighteenth year of facilitating literacies in higher education. Previous stints were at Rhodes, Fort Hare, and Unizulu. Eybers is passionate about the roles of languages, literacies, and identities in developing knowledge in institutions of higher learning. He views languages as tools for social understanding and evolving disciplines in higher education.
