The focus of this module is to enhance knowledge and insight into various mental disorders. A holistic approach is utilised where we explore the experiences of individuals who have these disorders, as well as the impact of these disorders on those close to them. Introductory diagnostic skills are developed: how to diagnose an individual when appropriate, the correct manner of writing a diagnosis and considering cultural beliefs when diagnosing.

The higher education sector has undergone an extensive alignment to the Higher Education Qualification Sub-Framework (HEQSF) across all institutions in South Africa. In order to comply with the HEQSF, all institutions are legally required to participate in a national initiative led by regulatory bodies such as the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
