On Saturday, 2 August 2025, the Faculty of Veterinary Science and the
Faculty of Health Sciences of the
University of Pretoria came together for an exciting day of skills display, knowledge, and solidarity at the Vet vs Med competition, hosted at the Onderstepoort Campus.
This annual event, first launched at the Prinshof Medical Campus in 2024, has quickly become a highlight on the student calendar.
The day featured two main challenges: a suturing competition and a trivia round of medical and scientific questions. Teams of veterinary and medical students joined forces in suturing teams, testing their practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Adding to the learning experience, the venue also hosted displays of both human and animal anatomy - an inspiring nod to the diversity of career paths represented.
Under the message of being “united in care”, the day began with encouraging words from Prof Rhoda Leask, Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning (Faculty of Veterinary Science), Prof Flavia Senkubuge, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and Prof Vanessa Steenkamp, Prof Leask’s counterpart at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Their words set the tone for a day filled with enthusiasm, teamwork, and friendly rivalry.
Students cheered each other on throughout the competitions and enjoyed exciting prizes, including a lucky draw sponsored by
Dotsure.co.za and the TSSS.
The winning suturing team, Team Blue, celebrated their victory with great excitement—a spirited blend of both veterinary and medical students. Individual prize winners included Percival Segopolo, Tumisane Motileng, Chelsea de Witt, and Amahle Ndawonde.
Although the competition features combined teams to encourage teamwork across disciplines, the final trivia round brought the true rivalry back to life: Vets vs Meds. In a tense final showdown, the Faculty of Veterinary Science clinched victory, securing the overall trophy for 2025. The trophy now returns to the Onderstepoort campus, after the Faculty of Health Sciences claimed the inaugural title in 2024.
The Faculty of Veterinary Science was proud to host the event and is looking forward to many more such opportunities to strengthen bonds between the health and veterinary sciences.
