GISSA Gauteng Awards and Annual General Meeting were held on Thursday, 28 November at the Tatso Lounge Bar at Time Square in Pretoria. At the award ceremony institutions and individuals that have contributed to geoinformation science, education or GISSA were acknowledged. During the AGM portion the new GISSA leadership was voted into office. The theme of the meeting was Implications of the Four Industrial Revolution on the Geo-spatial Industry.

The keynote address was given by the Honourable Adrian Roos, who spoke about the importance of geoinformation science in everyday life. Stuart Martin from Esri South Africa gave a talk on the 4^th industrial revolution (4IR) and the importance of the community to not be left behind but to embrace new technology, new methods, new approaches. Etienne Louw from mapIT in turn spoke about how geoinformation practitioners and scientists need to also have business and IT skills to allow them to thrive in the industry.

The Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology was nominated and won the Professional Education, Training and Capacity building category, beating the likes of Wits, UJ, ESRI, TGIS, AfriGIS, Intergraph Systems, and Hexagon. Prof Serena Coetzee and Dr Victoria Rautenbach, as well as Dr Anthony Cooper, an extraordinary lecturer with us were among the nominees for the Contribution to the development of the Geo-spatial Industry category, with Prof Coetzee receiving the runner-up award.  Dr Liz Gavin was the winner in this category.
