Investing in future leaders: UP agricultural undergrads awarded comprehensive bursaries by Standard Bank

University of Pretoria undergraduates Shampie Doko and Lunga Khumalo of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development recently became recipients of the Standard Bank CSI Bursary, which is awarded to students who have shown leadership and academic potential.
The bursary, which is administered by the StudyTrust, covers tuition fees in full as well as textbooks, transport and accommodation, among other things. It also includes a monthly stipend for living expenses, which will help the recipients to stay on track with their academic goals and could avoid delay in their uptake in the job market.
“I cannot begin to explain how much this opportunity has alleviated the stress for myself and my parents,” said Khumalo. “I truly believe in the sentiment of ubuntu: it takes a village to raise a child – I am where I am today because of the efforts of others. [Standard Bank] has catapulted me into the future and given me the chance to attain my dreams. I am eternally grateful and fully intend to make the most of this blessing.”
Both Doko and Khumalo are passionate about the future that the agriculture industry holds for the youth of South Africa.
“This bursary has eased my financial burden,” said Doko. “It will help me to focus more on my studies to ensure I perform at my best. I have no words to express my gratitude. This opportunity will not only make my dreams come true, but has also encouraged me to make a lasting impact wherever I may find myself.”
Representatives from the department said it was proud to have these two future leaders as part of its student corps, adding that the department is grateful for the support that Standard Bank is providing and is looking forward to more fruitful collaborations on future initiatives.
