The past weekend at a South African Ranking Judo Tournament in Cape Town he was in outstanding form winning all four his fights in under two minutes. He only started competing in February again after being banned for two years for the use of a banned substance.

When Zack Piontek steps onto the mat in Rio on Wednesday for his first ever judo fight at an Olympic Games, a father-and-son dream that started 14 years ago will become a reality.

It took approximately four years for Dale Whitaker to become a champion. This past weekend, the Tuks/hpc judoka won the gold medal in the under-80 kg category at the Commonwealth Championships, which took place in Port Elizabeth. Four years ago he won the junior title at the same championships.

Zack Piontek (Tuks/hpc) may have achieved his goal of representing South Africa at the Olympic Games in Rio by winning a silver medal for judo at the African Championships in Tunis, Tunisia.
