Posted on October 30, 2025

Prof Kgomotso Sibeko-Matjila, from the University of Pretoria's Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases (DVTD), has been elected as the President of the Parasitology Society of Southern Africa (PARSA). Her appointment was confirmed during the 54th PARSA Annual General Meeting, held on 17 September 2025 at Skukuza, Kruger National Park, South Africa.

PARSA is a distinguished non-profit organisation that brings together scientists and researchers dedicated to the study of parasitology. The society plays a vital role in promoting parasitological research, disseminating knowledge, and representing the interests of parasitologists across southern Africa.

Prof Sibeko-Matjila’s election is a historic milestone, as she becomes the first black President of PARSA since its establishment in 1971. Her leadership follows two successful terms as Secretary of PARSA from 2019 to 2025.

She now joins the ranks of esteemed predecessors from the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, including Prof Rosina Krecek (1995–1997) and Prof Banie Penzhorn (2010–2012), both former DVTD staff members.

The newly elected PARSA Council also includes two other DVTD members: Ms Faith Nkosi, appointed as Communication Manager, and Dr Zamantungwa Mnisi, who will serve as Secretary.

Earlier this year, in May 2025, Prof Sibeko-Matjila was also elected as one of the Co-Chairs of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology – Africa Network (WAAVP-AN).

This network unites professionals and institutions committed to advancing veterinary parasitology, improving animal welfare, and promoting sustainable livestock production across Africa. She previously served on the WAAVP-AN Risk and Audit Sub-Committee and as a member of the steering committee.

Notably, Prof Sibeko-Matjila presented the bid to host the 32nd WAAVP International Congress in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2029, during the 29th WAAVP Congress in Curitiba, Brazil. If successful, this will be the second time this prestigious event is held on African soil, the first being in Sun City, South Africa, 32 years ago.

Our heartfelt congratulations to Prof Sibeko-Matjila on these remarkable achievements. Her leadership and dedication continue to elevate the profile of veterinary parasitology in Africa and globally.
