At the Faculty of Veterinary Science, it’s not always just work and no play. Recently, the Dean, Professor Vinny Naidoo, invited all staff to a fun-filled afternoon of trivia, music, food, and prizes.
The third annual Faculty Quiz took place on 15 September 2025 in the Crisp Cafeteria at the Onderstepoort Campus. The inaugural event was held in 2023, and since then, it has become a much-anticipated highlight on the faculty calendar.
Staff members were encouraged to form teams of eight and put their general knowledge to the test in a bid to outwit the competition. Departments and units from across the Faculty, the Faculty’s Veterinary Academic Hospital, and a team from the Dean’s Office joined in, setting the tone for an exciting and spirited afternoon. Each team arrived with its own name, theme song, and creative dress code — all adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
A total of nine teams competed this year:
• Vet Lab Squad (Postgraduate Students Association or PGSA)
• Shear Luck (Production Animals)
• Lab-Coated Legends (Paraclinical Sciences and last year’s winners)
• Skeleton Crew (Anatomy and Physiology)
• Bark and Brains (OVAH)
• Tropicana (Veterinary Tropical Diseases)
• Tower 6 (Dean’s Office)
• Animal Caretakers (mixed units and departments)
• Vavhenda (also mixed units and departments)
The quizmaster for the day was Prof Rhoda Leask, Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, aka Superwoman, assisted by her superhero crew. Batman for the day was none other than Prof Vinny Naidoo, Dean of the Faculty.
The competition consisted of four rounds with the following categories:
• Round 1: Local and international music
• Round 2: Local and international sports
• Round 3: Movies and history (local and international)
• Round 4: Movie anagrams
Teams competed fiercely, answering questions through an interactive app within a set time limit, using point-based scoring. Each team nominated one representative to submit answers on their behalf once the session IDs were received.
The leaderboard changed throughout the afternoon: In round 1 the Lab-Coated Legends led with 18 out of 20 points. In round 2 Vavhenda overtook them with 28 out of 31. Round 3 belonged to the Skeleton Crew who moved ahead with 26 out of 30. Round 4 was dominated by Bark and Brains with a perfect 15 out of 15, earning them the title of overall winners of the Faculty Quiz 2025.
Once again, the event highlighted the strong sense of community within the Faculty. Its main purpose — to help everyone unwind, step away from busy schedules, and simply have fun — was certainly achieved, with plenty of fun that was had by all.
Bark and Brains were the overall winning team of Faculty Quiz 2025.
