The Faculty of Veterinary Science’s Onderstepoort Community Choir delivered a standout performance at the recent UP Choirs Concert held on 11 May in the University of Pretoria’s Musaion Theater. The choir was part of an annual special event, presented by the
University of Pretoria Youth Choir, and which also included UP Tuks Camerata, the UP Health Sciences Choir and the UP Ovuwa Cultural Ensemble.
The audience was enthralled by the OP Community Choir's performance of “Ndiyoyika” and participated by ululating their enjoyment and approval of the performance. It was a celebration of the lovely rendition of this traditional IsiXhosa song.
They also performed ‘Sing Gently’, ‘Lion Judah’ and ‘Revelation 19:1/Modimo Reboka Wena under the guidance of Conductor Edwin Mitas and Accompanist Dr Andrea Kayser-Mitas.
The concert was filled with beautiful melodies, pulsating rhythm and lovely songs performed by the various choirs in different languages. It included other songs such as ‘Ave Maria’ (UP Health Sciences Choir), ‘Gebed’ from Koos du Plessis (UP Youth Choir), ‘Ha Re Se Bina’ and ‘Pula’ (UP Youth Choir), ‘All My Trails’ (UP Tuks Camerata) and ‘Baba Wethu’ and ‘Sotho Maiden Dance’ (UP Ovuwa Cultural Ensemble).
The UP Youth Choir is a multi-cultural and diverse group of young performers aged 14 – 19 years from 30 different High Schools affiliated with the University of Pretoria, School of the Arts.
It is the mission of the UP Youth Choir to provide children of all different backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance that seeks to fulfil and develop each singer’s potential, while creating a model of artistic excellence and diversity that enriches the community.
The group will undertake a tour to Prague and Germany from 3 to 15 December. The unfortunate circumstance with such tours and even local journeys is that more than 50% of their choir members are unable to fund their journeys.
