Another year, another highly successful PD Challenge

Posted on August 31, 2022

The Faculty's recent 2022 PD (Pregnancy Diagnosis) Challenge, sponsored by the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Zoetis and IMV Imaging, was again a great success. According to Dr Kate May, coordinator of the PD Challenge and manager of the Skills Lab, this year students were divided into two groups based on their competence in cattle transrectal palpation. The PD Challengers went straight into the final rounds for both beef and dairy cattle. The Qualifiers were given additional palpation opportunities and “cow-side” feedback to help improve their palpation skills. Thereafter, they also participated in a final round of their own.

"During the week, both groups were given an opportunity to perform transrectal ultrasonography using IMV Imaging’s Easy-Scan: Go plus BUG viewing goggles. Students really enjoyed this additional aspect of pregnancy diagnosis in cattle," Dr May said.
The results were as follows:

PD Champion: Jonathan Fourie
Runner-up: Jean-Luc de la Rey
First lady and most improved: Rachel van Staden
Qualifier Champion: Jeremy Tratschler

Prizes at the award ceremony were handed to the winners by the Faculty's Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, Prof Dietmar Holm. A big thank you also to the team that assisted on the day namely Prof Holm, Dr Takula Tshuma, Sr Reinette Ludike and Ms Lana Botha.

Congratulations to everyone who participated
