#UPGraduation2022: ‘Growing personally and professionally together has brought a sense of achievement into our lives’ – UP graduates the Molapos

Posted on April 25, 2022

Furthering their studies at the University of Pretoria (UP) was the best move they could have made for their careers, say Elizabeth and Jonas Molapo, a married couple who obtained their postgraduate qualifications from UP.

For them, UP is recognised as one of the world’s top universities and offers a high quality of education. “Getting my qualifications at UP opened doors for me and gave me options that I did not previously have,” Jonas says. “Because of the quality of education provided, I have learnt a lot and have a better understanding of my field of work.”

Elizabeth, who is a sales engineer at Xylem Water Solutions, graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Environmental Technology in 2018 and an MSc in Water Resource Management in 2022; while Jonas, a network project manager at PCCW Global, obtained a certificate in Project Management in 2012 and a BSc (Hons) in Technology Management in 2016.

Elizabeth admits that getting her degree was not always smooth sailing, and that time management was a major challenge. “Being married with two small children, running a household and having a full-time job meant I had little time left for my studies, but I made time,” she says. “Dedication carried me through. The support and patience of my family eased the process for me. The highlight is the relationships I formed at UP. I have made good friends and we support one another beyond school.”

Jonas adds that life after graduation has been good to them. “We are blessed to have each other and to support each other’s careers. The journey to grow personally and professionally together has brought a sense of achievement into our lives.”

To prospective UP students, Elizabeth says that the University will change the way they think. “The lecturers have so much knowledge; you will not leave the same person again. A degree from UP will set you apart in the world of work and will make you competitive among your peers.”

The couple maintain that alumni are role models for current and upcoming students. “Students who have completed their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees have asked me for advice on which subjects to choose, and to recommend lectures to supervise their projects,” Elizabeth says. “The role of alumni goes way beyond, even after years of having completed their qualification. They serve as the go-to people for information, support and advice for other students.”
