Women’s Month: Focus on Ms Nina Parry

Q: Job title and in which department/research entity do you work?
A: PhD Entomology candidate in the Department of Zoology and Entomology

Q: What has been the highlight of your career?
A: I worked as a researcher with a start-up company, rearing black soldier fly larvae for fruit and vegetable waste bioconversion. This gave me a valuable opportunity to apply my academic knowledge to the industry and to build up my practical knowledge and skill.

Q: What inspires you?
A: My study focus is using flies like black soldier flies and blowflies in bioconversion. These flies have fantastic potential for both waste management and in producing sustainable animal feed ingredients. The potential that these flies have to make a difference in sustainability inspires me daily.

Q: What challenges have you experienced in your career?
A: There is a big gap between academia and industry, and bridging that gap is a challenge.

Q: What message do you have for the youth of South Africa?
A: Studying and working in science is challenging but can be very rewarding. If you want to follow a career in science, speak to people already on that path so that you understand what it entails and what your opportunities will be. This way, you will understand what the best way forward is.
