UP claims first prize in the South African Tertiary Mathematics Olympiad

On Saturday, 22 August 205 tertiary students from eight Universities participated in the annual South African Tertiary Mathematics Olympiad (SATMO) that is sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA). The SATMO is open to all undergraduate students. In other words, any student enrolled at a university, who have not been studying for more than four years. [samf.ac.za]

This year UP came out on top!

The university rankings:
1st University of Pretoria
2nd University of the Witwatersrand
3rd Stellenbosch University
4th University of kwaZulu Natal
5th Rhodes University
6th University of the Western Cape
7th University of Venda
8th University of the Free State

Nationally, some 204 students wrote SATMO with an average mark of 3.96/20. The top three UP students are Adriaan de Clercq (doing BSc Honours in Mathematics) with 14/20; James Murray Louw (3rd year of BSc in Mathematics) with 13/20; Louis Nel (1st year of BSc in Mathematics) with 13/20. Adriaan is tied for second position nationally. Both Adriaan and Louis were in the Siyanqoba Programme in high school.

First year:
• Louis Nel (BSc in Mathematics): 13/20
• Sonali Bhaga (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 10/20
• Natasha Yoko (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 10/20
Second year:
• Clarence Panashe Chishaka (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 11/20
• David Mark Dodkins (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 10/20
• Kevin Marbach (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 9/20
Third year:
• James Murray Louw (BSc in Mathematics): 13/20
• Kwadwo Afrane-Okese (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 9/20
• Hannan Petker (BSc in Actuarial and Financial Mathematics): 5/20
