Meteorology Honours student wins award

Posted on August 06, 2020

One of the Department's BScHons Meteorology students, Tsholanang Rammopo, was awarded with one of the 2019 SSAG Outstanding Honours Research Awards. The Society of South African Geographers (SSAG) awards two such awards each year, to highlight outstanding work done by students in the geographical and related sciences. Tsholanang's Honours research report was titled The role of nonquasigeostrophic forcing during cut-off low pressure system onsets over South Africa and supervised by Dr Thando Ndarana.

We were able to catch up with Tsholanang to chat about what the award means to him.

Q: What does the award mean to you?

A: The award just means I was lucky enough to be compensated for what is expected of every student, which is to work as hard as possible to meet, or exceed the course requirements. So I’m really grateful for it.

Q: What does the project mean for you?

A: Dynamical Meteorology has mostly been studied from a theoretical point of view in South Africa. So for me, it’s amazing and encouraging to see how theory actually can, and does apply to real life situations for us. By taking this approach, I think we stand a better chance at improving the predictability of high impact weather over South Africa.

Q: Is there anything more you would like to add?

A: I didn’t know that such an award existed to be honest, had I known, I believe it would’ve served as some serious motivation for me to work even harder. Therefore, I hope the current GGM honours students would find this as a motivation factor to work even harder on their research projects. This would also ensure that the research output coming from the department is of extremely high standards, anyone can do it.

The Department would like to congratulate Tsholanang on his outstanding achievement. The Department would also like to thank the SSAG for their continued support of students and emerging career researchers in the geographical sciences.
