Abe Bailey Tour

Posted on January 15, 2008

The Abe Bailey Trust and Travel Bursary was established in terms of the Will of Sir Abe Bailey who died in 1940. It is essentially an endowment for financing the spirit of friendliness, enterprise and zest in South African patriotism. The credo of the trust is “Leadership Development with the emphasis on Nation Building”. The Trustees of the Abe Bailey Trust make funds available for travel bursaries known as the Abe Bailey Bursaries. These Bursaries give University students and staff of Junior Lecturer status an opportunity to visit the United Kingdom, participating in educational tours according to an approved programme. (See www.abebailey.org)

The selected bursars from various South African universities gathered in Cape Town on 21 November 2007, spent two days together for orientation and departed for London by air on 23 November 2007. The tour officially ended in London on 15 December 2007, arriving back in South Africa on 16 December 2007. All bursars (including the ones from our Department of Statistics) become a member of the Abe Bailey Fellowship comprising of past bursars since the tour's inception in 1951.
