Kgabo Ramela is a young BTech student appointed in a contract post that is being supported by the Faculty for the first six months of this year. During February 4-8, Dr Maggi Loubser from our Geology Department took Ramela along with her to the AXAA conference in Melbourne, Australia to present the research he has done on the development of a technique to fuse Chromite rich materials for the purpose of XRF sample preparation.

It is critical to note that this is a huge problem for industry and XRF spectroscopists has grappled with it for years without success. Kgabo had a major breakthrough and presented his paper entitled: Chromite Fusions: Finally, a Conquest. At the conference dinner, Ramela was awarded the prize for the best student oral presentation. "This is amazing when one considers that it was his first conference presentation ever, his first overseas trip ever and that he was competing with students working on MSc and PhD degrees in topics like Synchrotron radiation," elaborated Dr Loubser who concluded in stating that the young man is a huge asset to the facility and has a great future ahead of him.
