Long Service Awards

The Long-service Awards ceremony took place on February, 25 at the Deans Committee Room. The Faculty Dean, Prof Ströh thanked and awarded certificates to the candidates who had each served the University for 20 years.

Each candidate was interviewed after the ceremony to find out their greatest lessons and things that they may know that many others might not know (with regards to the campus). Daleen Muler revealed that she had seen two fires on campus. "The first [fire] was in 1975 when the top floor of the old Agricultural Building burned down during renovations to the building (should still have the 8mm film I took of it somewhere), and the second was in 1984/5 when a fridge exploded in a lab on the ground floor of the new Agricultural Building and the whole lab was gutted," she continued.

Valentina Nkosi expressed her satisfaction in being associated with a world-class institution and the drastic changes that she has noted in Afrikaans being the main language spoken on campus- to how various other languages are now integrated in the ordinary colloquial speech. "Campus is just so much more beautiful in terms of the landscape; many things have changed.  One thing I'd like to see evolve in the future is for contract posts to be reviewed, but all in all- I am very happy," remarked Nkosi.

"Even amidst the changes in landscape, fashion and student culture... The one thing that I have learned is that people are still people. Human relations are still very important," concludes Ingrid Vis who reinforces the notion that the University is on the right track and that she is grateful that support staff is also being recognized.

These are the names of the candidates along with their HODs who accompanied them to the ceremony:

·            Ingrid Vis & Prof Sue Nicolson

·            Daleen Muller & Prof Lise Korsten

  • Valentina Nkosi & Prof Mike Wingfield
