“This year Sci-Enza decided to focus on the Grade 12 learners because it will be the first group that is going to write the new National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination. We invited several schools and they were exposed to exciting Grade 12 portfolio-experiments,” says Mrs Rudi Horak, Curator of Sci-Enza - the oldest interactive Science Centre in our country, located on the Hatfield campus of the University of Pretoria.

According to Horak, Prof Cedric Smith and Mr Eddie Jansen presented refreshing workshops to the children. This event drew the attention of several provincial and national primary and secondary school learners. “Primary school learners were also invited to visit the Mapungubwe Museum as the Mapungubwe history is part of the Grade 6 curriculum. A hands-on workshop was also part of the activities, which included the children making of their own Mapungubwe rhino,” elaborates Horak.

In staying close to the NSW theme of Tomorrow’s science and technology is in our youth’s hands, Sci-Enza’s postgraduate interns also got involved. “As interns who are involved with the NSW, our main aim is to nurture the young minds and give exposure to science and technology in hope to secure a better scientific future for our integrated nation,” conclude Sci-Enza Interns Mamofalali Motheo and Puleng Tsie.
