University Of Pretoria Empowers Agricultural Economic Departments In Africa

Posted on January 27, 2009

According to Prof Willis Oluoch-Kosura, the workshop was aimed at improving the quality of the Collaborative Masters Program in Agricultural and Applied Economics in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (CMAAE) and also as a first step to enable the various Departments to offer the full curriculum in the respective home universities.

“We have representatives from different regions and countries here today. One of the aims for this gathering is to share ideas on how the curriculum can be made even more relevant and applicable. At least six departments are represented and will participate in coming up with solutions for developing common understandings, for the embittering of the curriculum,” says Prof Oluoch-Kosura.

Dr Alexander Phiri, a Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics at the University of Malawi reinforced the notions of generating and learning from the multiple perspectives of others.

“My expectations from this workshop are plenty. I expect to get better understanding of applications and relevance. I would also like this platform to be one wherein we can be challenged to broaden our perspectives. We are all from developing countries and we should take something out of the diversity,” continues Dr Phiri.

In a similar voice, Enid Katungi from the University of Makerere in Uganda said that she hopes to see linkages, share and learn from the opinions and experiences of others.

“I am glad to be part of this workshop. What really matters to me is that we all leave here with a unified and integrated opinion,” concludes Katungi.
