This internationally acclaimed educational conference will be held in Seoul, Korea in 2012. According to Prof Engelbrecht, the committee consists of twenty people from the four corners of the globe - all highly reputable researchers in mathematics education. The committee has recently been appointed and will have its first meeting in June in Seoul.

Of note is that the International Congress on Mathematics Education which is hosted by the ICMI, is currently considered to be the largest academic conference on mathematics education. It globally attracts scholars and researchers who are involved in the mathematical sphere to participate in several academic activities. This conference is held once every four years.

Perhaps what is more captivating about this internationally known mathematics educator is his sincere love for the subject and passion to see the youth of South Africa take their rightful place in the sought after mathematics and science related career fields.

“Few people will disagree that mathematics is one of the most fascinating of all intellectual disciplines; it is an art form and a challenging game. The study of mathematics is not only exciting, but important. Mathematicians have an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to society by helping to solve problems in such diverse fields as medicine, economics, finance, biology, computer science, physics, psychology, engineering and social science,” says Prof Engelbrecht.

According to Prof Engelbrecht, mathematics is fundemental for strengthening analytical problem-solving skills which are highly sought after by employers in this present rapidly changing environment. The multidisciplinary aspect of mathematics is of great interest to him and should be so to oher prospective young mathematicians thinking of making their mark in the international arena.

“Mathematics is often done in conjunction with other fields and it is wise to have a strong background in mathematics for areas such as biomathematics, economics, physics and geology. So what can you do with a degree in mathematics? Actually, just about anything. Some of us are hopelessly in love with mathematics - we want to be doing mathematics all day. Others like mathematics but are more interested in the applications. Fortunately, there are employment opportunities for all of us,” concludes Prof Engelbrecht.
