Marketing students hit a hole-in-one with the ScoreFuse golf app

Posted on December 08, 2020

The Department of Marketing Management collaborated with the developers of a golf-scoring app, ScoreFuse, for a project with the second-year BCom (Marketing Management) students. The second-year practical project is the first introduction in which BCom (Marketing Management) students have the opportunity to put to practice what they have learnt by working with a real-life client on a real-life challenge.

This year, students were afforded the opportunity to develop an integrated marketing communication (IMC) campaign for ScoreFuse, a newly launched golf-scoring app with a live leaderboard. The focus of the IMC campaign was to help raise awareness and educate golfers between the ages of 18 and 35 years on the use of the app. The project commenced in August 2020, when students were virtually introduced to the client, and were provided with an overview of the app and how it came to fruition, by one of its developers, Marnus van Heerden. Throughout the semester, students were then tasked to work on various assignments, with the aim of compiling a holistic IMC campaign that was to be presented to the client at the end of the semester.

Armed with a great sense of excitement, students presented their final IMC campaigns online, in November 2020, to an exam panel. The panel comprised of a representative from ScoreFuse, Marnus van Heerden, and lecturers Dr Danita van Heerden and Dr Jade Verbeek. The students presented well-thought through campaign ideas that were brought to life on-screen through creative designs of their proposed social media posts, pamphlets, branded merchandise and YouTube video advertisements, to name but a few of the many proposed communication tools and elements.

Online presentation by Team 1 (Daniël Müller, Melissa Pretorius, Ruan Kotze and Hanrich Oosthuyzen)

Online presentation by Team 21 (Grant Algeo, Katleho Tau, Stephan van Heerden and Stephanus van der Walt)

Online presentation by Team 9 (Jenna Moll, Connor Wilson, Greg Harvey and Ross Whitelaw)

The exam panel were very impressed by the level of professionalism and creativity that all the student teams demonstrated throughout their presentations. However, there were three teams that were identified and awarded prizes, sponsored by ScoreFuse, for their exceptional ideas and presentations:
1st prize: Linda Viljoen, Matt Askew, Kyli Jacobs and Jade Thompson
2nd prize: Kirsten Blane, Sydney-Louise Gailey, Carl Théron and Corinne Landman
3rd prize: Chloe White, Dante Koster, Kieran Venter, Oreratile Kau, Nathan Cary

First-prize winners: Matt Askew, Jade Thompson, Kyli Jacobs and Linda Viljoen

After the presentations, the client expressed how impressed they were with the students’ standard of work, and as a result they decided to provide the students with an opportunity to apply for a position as a partner in their business. This position would entail running and coordinating all of the sales and marketing functions for ScoreFuse, for a potential profit-share in the business. This is an exciting prospect for a second-year student to be a part of a dynamic team for such an innovative app, which will take the golfing community by storm.

A huge thank you to the ScoreFuse team for providing our second-year BCom (Marketing Management) students with an invaluable experience this year.
