EMS Faculty Awards function honours top-performing academic staff

The Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences hosted its annual awards function on 5 June 2019 in celebration of the achievements of academic staff during 2018. In her welcome address, the Dean, Prof Elsabé Loots, expressed how proud she was of the performance of the staff over the past academic year. Some of the achievements she highlighted included an expansion of innovative teaching and learning methods, as well as 81% of all journals articles being published in international journals. 
 
Prof Johan Oberholster, Deputy Dean for Teaching and Learning, commended the upward trend in the Faculty’s overall undergraduate pass rate, which increased to 82,4% in 2018, compared to 81% in 2017.
 
During the ceremony, Teaching and Learning Awards were given to lecturers who introduced innovations in their classrooms, maintained high module pass rates and were assessed to be good teachers based an objective evaluation on their teaching and classroom practice. The winners were Ms Marchantia Pollock, Ms Elna Verster and Mr Jaco Bezuidenhout from the Department of Accounting (also winners of the University of Pretoria Laureate Award), Dr Alex Bignotti from the Department of Business Management, and Ms Jade Verbeek from the Department of Marketing Management.

In introducing the Research Awards category, Prof Jan van Heerden, Acting Deputy Dean for Research and Postgraduate Studies, thanked the academic staff for their research outputs. This included publishing 204 journal articles, equating to more than 132 units, with conference contributions, books and book chapters bringing about a total of almost 160 units for 2018.

  • Best Junior Researcher in Management Sciences: Mr Wesley Niemann (Department of Business Management)
  • Best Junior Researcher in Financial Sciences: Prof Hanneke du Preez (Department of Taxation)
  • Best Junior Researcher in Economic Sciences: Dr Marius van Oordt (Department of Economics)
  • Best Senior Researcher in Management Sciences: Prof Alewyn Nel (Department of Human Resource Management)
  • Best Senior Researcher in Financial Sciences: Prof Elda du Toit (Department of Financial Management)
  • Best Senior Researcher in Economic Sciences: Prof Steve Koch (Department of Economics)
  • Most Improved Research Outputs by a Department: Department of Taxation
  • Researcher of the Year: Prof Rangan Gupta (Department of Economics)

Academics who received their National Research Foundation ratings were also recognised on the night. Prof Steve Koch, Head of the Department of Economics, received a C2 rating and Prof Anneli Douglas from the Department of Marketing Management was awarded a C3 NRF rating. Prof Ronél Rensburg from the Department of Business Management was posthumously awarded a B3 rating.
