Marketing honours students selected for Discovery internship programme

Posted on August 22, 2018

The Marketing Management honours programme is designed to prepare students for the world of work. Thus students are constantly encouraged to participate in vacation work and internship opportunities. Discovery provided them with one such opportunity.

In May 2018, Discovery approached four universities to identify candidates to fill their 10 internship vacancies. The Department of Marketing Management is very proud to announce that five of those spots were filled by BCom Honours Marketing Management students from UP!

The Discovery internship programme was an intense two-week programme during July, which entailed the interns working on various projects.

Nicola Wilson writes:
As part of the Discovery marketing internship, each portfolio within marketing assigned interns a project to work on. In groups of three we conducted research, devised a strategy or solution and presented it to representatives of each portfolio. We were thus afforded the opportunity to work with a variety of brands and use different marketing platforms within Discovery, such as Insure, Invest, Sponsorships, Vitality, Health, Store and Digital. We also visited the 947 studios and were tasked to write a script for a radio advertisement, which we were later afforded the opportunity to record.

Discovery encourages its employees to live a balanced lifestyle, so during our internship they encouraged us to do the same. We were fortunate to attend many social events, such as a Barnyard Theatre performance and a food and wine pairing at the Michelangelo Hotel, as well as to watch the Soccer World Cup Final at the Hilton Hotel Shebeen and attend the Katy Perry concert.

Comments made by the interns:
Ahmed Elbeiti Abdelmoniem: “This experience really taught me the meaning of working in a demanding, deadline-driven environment.”

Anele Madikizela: “The Discovery internship showed me not only how to manage my time with other engagements, but also gave me first-hand experience of what goes into creating and managing a multifaceted brand.”

Kearopetse Moloabi: “One of my greatest lessons throughout the internship was how to be resilient. There were days when I wondered if my group and I would be able to deliver our work because of the little time we had, but I had to quickly remind myself that giving up was not an option and I kept pushing and put my best foot forward. As a result I now know that I can definitely achieve just about anything I put my mind to!”

Following the internship, two students were offered full-time positions (Nicola Wilson and Lihle Yotwana) and one was offered a part-time position (Kearopetse Moloabi). We are extremely proud of our students and wish them well!
