One group’s will to excel

Posted on March 30, 2016

On 9 March, the BCom (Hons) Marketing Management class of 2016 presented to their first client, customer insights consultancy Consulta. There was an atmosphere of anxiety and excitement, as the students did not know what to expect.

The students were challenged to analyse data and make recommendations based on the findings. Each team had to present their ideas to Consulta’s management team.

All teams had to do similar calculations, therefore it was key that they present the data in interesting ways and make good recommendations.

Team 6 won the challenge. Their calculations were correct and their video was creative. Various positive comments were shared, and Mr Kobus Badenhorst of Consulta said that this team came across as “very professional”. The Department of Marketing Management aims to develop professional, employable students, and it is encouraging to have industry noting this so early in the programme.

Many lessons were learnt throughout the presentations, as the lecturer and the representatives from Consulta gave comments, feedback and constructive criticism. This was all aimed at improving students’ presentation skills, confidence and most importantly, to prepare them for the world of work.

The field of market research is an area that all marketers need to understand, as it may be an option when considering a career. While perfection may be hard to reach, team 6 certainly reached the bar of excellence. The tone for marketing of services has been set!
