Valentine’s Day competition: Create a name and catchy slogan

Posted on February 22, 2016

A Valentine’s Day competition was launched amongst the BCom Marketing Management students during February 2016. Students were required to invent a catchy name and slogan for a new company that supplies cakes and platters. A bonus prize was offered to students that also designed a logo. The competition encouraged students to gain practical experience and to learn how to deal directly with industry clients.

A total of 43 entries were received. Overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response, the client, Jenny Coetser, commented: “I was really impressed with the students’ creativity and the quality of entries”.

The prize-giving was held on 12 February. The joint winners in the ‘Overall business name, slogan and logo’ category, Cassandra Mayer and Akivan Kemraj, each received a Red Velvet Valentine's Day cake. Runners up in the categories ‘Business name with a logo’ and ‘Business name without a logo’ received a variety of Valentine's Day cupcakes. Bonus prizes for the ‘Best logo’ and ‘Best slogan’ received Valentine's Day checkerboard cakes. Each entrant that attended the prize-giving received a cupcake.

The company name decided upon, was The Custom Slice – The sweeter slice of life.
