SAB shows the marketing students how to sell it!

Posted on June 10, 2015

The Department of Marketing Management teams up with the Human Resources Development (Learning and Development) team from South African Breweries (SAB) to expose students to valuable selling skills as part of the third-year BCom Marketing Management module Personal Selling and Account Management (BEM 315).

This module aims to equip mainstream marketing students with the necessary skills to differentiate them from other third-year students and to kick-start their careers in the field of personal selling. Topics covered by the SAB team this year over a three-week period included communication styles, L.A.E.R listening skills, questioning techniques, negotiation tools, role plays and brand engagement.

The REDD’s challenge involved brand engagement with REDD’s cider. Students had to develop creative ideas to promote REDD’s cider to the student target market. The winners, Robyn Schormann and Monica Rossi, suggested the design of a Carnival Camel Pack that student’s can wear on their back during events. This would be a much more convenient packaging idea as it can also be refilled. There would then not be a problem of glass, tins or plastic cup litter at events. SAB found their idea short, sweet, relevant, practical and well-presented. The students won an opportunity to present their idea to the REDD’s brand team.

Some students had to do practical exercises in front of the class, which took them out of their comfort zones. The participants as well as the observers in the class learned a lot from the experience and thoroughly enjoyed it, as is evident from their comments:
  • “A thousand thank you’s to the truly awesome SAB team for the great learning experience. It takes some really special people to make getting up before 8:00 a good time. Thanks a bunch!” – Rayne Ponting
  • “Thank you SAB for sharing your experiences and knowledge about your work place, brands and what goes on in the marketing world!” – Kate Ngobeni and Palesa Molefe
  • “Thank you for the time and effort that you put in for us. We learned a lot from SAB. I hope to work for a company such as SAB one day.” – Nicole Venner
Class representative Wongani Kapowo thanked the SAB team on behalf of the Department of Marketing Management and handed over a small gift as token of appreciation.
